This Is What Happens When You Focus On Follower Milestones

‘I’ll be happy when I start making money from Instagram’

‘I just need to get to 10k followers and it will all be worth it’

‘I need to post daily until I make 100 sales, then I can chill’

Sound familiar?

Destination addiction is very common. We’ve been trained to keep striving for the next milestone, and that celebrating what we have already achieved is something to be done quickly and in private.

Focusing on follower milestones is all wrong for two reasons.

One: they don’t mean anything.

You can’t go to the mortgage broker and show them how many people follow you, you can’t cash followers in for groceries at the store, or even jump to the front of the line at the doctor’s office. Yes, the more followers you have the more potential you have to make money – but you don’t get paid per follower, you actually have to create the content that converts them into buyers of your products (I have a course to help with that here.)

Two: they’re distracting you from the real numbers that matter: your engagement rate – which is something brands look at when deciding who to work with, and the amount of money you’re making from either selling your products or using affiliate links on Instagram. Those are the numbers to focus on if you want to monetise your audience.

While you’re out here exhausting yourself trying to get to 10k followers, I’d focus on figuring out your niche and adding value to your followers.
