Why I started Bloggers of Colour

All writers know the frustrating feeling of working on a piece for weeks, shooting images and publishing it, only to have no one read it.

I wanted to create an online community for people who were interested in reading and sharing articles online, and inspiring each other to be better.

There were already some amazing online communities for bloggers and writers when I set up Bloggers of Colour on November 30 2015,  I’ve shared the links to some of my favourites below, but I wanted to create something just for people of colour. Here’s why:

Underrepresented and underexposed, creatives of colour are often overlooked and ignored – putting in the work for years – it seemingly takes much more effort for us to be honoured at the award ceremonies, listed on the 30 under 30 lists and featured on the front covers.

Some people might even be of the opinion that the reason the average person on the street cannot name you 10 bloggers of colour is because we don’t blog. As you can see from the work we share daily at BOC, that’s simply not true.

At first I was the anonymous founder, and only those who I had invited to be guests at our Twitter chats knew who I was. But during one of the chats people were asking who was behind it, and I felt like a creepy catfish for staying quiet.

Here’s why I didn’t want my face all over Bloggers of Colour:

I don’t want people to look at me and think that Bloggers of Colour is only for women like me, because it’s not. Bloggers of Colour is for anyone who identifies as a person of colour who writes, blogs or vlogs. Let’s lift each other up and win more.

Special thanks
I’d like to thank:

  • Mika who has been supporting BOC since we had like minus one follower on Twitter.
  • Steph Royalty who was the first to feature us in a blog post and whose gifs make us cry with laughter.

  • Pam who is our most outspoken and enthusiastic supporter and hasn’t missed a single Twitter chat yet.

  • Hannah Ajala who was the first person I told about my detailed plans for BOC and who continues to advise me and tell me what I’m doing wrong (and right sometimes…)

More love from Bloggers of Colour supporters
